Thanks Joel. Like I said to Bill, the important thing is not burning the domain, rather fully considering that option before investing resources in a recovery process.

Of course a new domain doesn't have to be a wholesale rebrand - adding a hyphen, removing one, adding or removing a geographic term, etc. are all ways to move domain without renaming the business.

The tough part is that you can't just torch domain names for some businesses. It's a pretty tough sell to go, "Hey, rename your company so that you can have web success again!"

But there are many sites I wish I could do it for; some things just aren't worth saving.

Good post Iain, I think there are too many agencies and clients alike that simply jump into removal and re-inclusion without looking at the bigger picture of the irreparable damage to the site and the brand. Spending the time and resources that would have been spent removing links building a new domain and doing some proper marketing shit will no doubt be more beneficial in the end. There is also no guarantee at the end of a link removal project that Google will remove any penalties, the damage is done... sometimes it's better to just move on and learn from previous mistakes.

I have to hold my hand up and say 'me too'. We've decided once on a project that there are too many links that would need to be either removed or disavowed and that what would be left is actually probably 20% of work of removing the crap.
So I totally agree - where possible (client's sometimes won't go through with it) I suggest weighting up the work required to clean up a domain versus building a new domain up.

I don't think my advice is to always burn a penalised site, rather to consider it and make an educated decision before committing resources to a recovery effort.

Thanks for reading Bill, always appreciate your input. A much wiser man than I!
